A modern, luxury house with large glass windows and a manicured lawn surrounded by tropical plants and palm trees. The house sits at the base of a green hill, with a partially cloudy sky in the background.

A Contemporary Caribbean Beach House officially on the Market

What comes to mind when I think Caribbean beach house typically involves white-washed wicker, anchor-patterned throw cushions and seashell embellishments. In every room. But not all beach houses are created equal. Oil Nut Bay’s contemporary Beach House is one such example, and while she still embodies all the easygoing ambience that every oceanfront home should, she has elegantly evaded all coastal clichés.

Considered Creativity

The key lies in the home’s self-possessed subtlety. Conceived by Athens- and London-based ISV Architects, both the villa interior and exterior echo the firm’s signature use of spatial geometry, fusion of outdoor and indoor spaces, and sensitive use of natural and artificial light.

“Our main objective in the design of The Beach House was to create a space that is articulated through a succession of internal spaces and courtyards”, explains ISV architect Alexander Van Gilder. “We favored the use of large window surfaces throughout the house offering a feeling of continuity while bringing the outside in and the inside out. All design decisions facilitate the concept of open-air living that is, in our view essential for this type of house.”

“In terms of architectural style,” continues Van Gilder, “our endeavor was to design the house giving a modern and contemporary take on the Caribbean beach house style. This decision achieves the seamless integration of the construction to its surroundings while giving the user a house that is custom designed for his needs and lifestyle.”

And the result is just that – a perpetual flow of tropical chic that is altogether soothing, sophisticated and serviceable.

Space, Air and Light

Access to the villa is gained via a sleek atrium. Floating steps cut a swath between lawn and reflecting pool to a generous front door which opens onto the heart of the home. Despite its polished persona, this Caribbean Beach House is also a place for family. Light streams into the living area through floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors, highlighting the home’s refined aesthetic and revealing views of an expansive infinity pool, outdoor entertainment and lounge area, and the beach and Caribbean Sea beyond. The living room is dominated by an indulgent oversized couch and large dining table, both perfect for family gatherings. An open-plan kitchen is fitted with top-of-the-range Wolf appliances and features a sociable breakfast bar. The space is completed by a private, seal-off study, perfect for any guest needing to mix a little business with pleasure.

The family-friendly layout continues to incorporate all six bedrooms under one roof. Two ocean-facing ensuite master bedrooms include their own walk-in closets and, my personal favorite, sumptuous tropical shower gardens. A further four guest bedrooms wrap around the villa, each with their own deluxe bathroom.

The Great Outdoors

While this Caribbean beach home has alluring interior, her contemporary outdoor entertainment area is likely where the majority of your vacation time will be spent. Dining and lounge space fronts a gorgeous infinity pool and sleek sunken fire pit, while a short sandy path leads onto the protected beach beyond. Despite the home’s secluded feel, it is only a brief beach walk away from the heart of the resort and main Beach Club with its restaurants, pools and watersports.

As we continue to adjust to the new world that we face, travelers are going to demand different things from their vacation destinations. The Beach House is not only more than its appellation suggests. It’s sequestered location and comprehensive configuration make it the stuff of post-quarantine dreams. There are not many places on earth that so successfully combine luxury and safety. And not a starfish paperweight in sight.
